Best Sunset Spots in South Bay Scarborough

A favourite spot, just a couple of minutes’ walk from our front door, is the Esplanade. This grand Victorian promenade offers elevated views over the South Bay beach, and as the sun begins to lower in the sky, the sea reflects shades of amber, rose and gold. Find a bench, breathe in the sea air, and simply let the view wash over you. It’s a lovely way to end the day, particularly after a leisurely dinner or an afternoon exploring the local area.

One of the most delightful things about Scarborough is how the sea, sky, and surrounding cliffs come together in perfect harmony at dusk. The light softens, the sounds of the day settle, and everything feels just that little bit more serene. From our position here on the South Cliff, guests are perfectly placed to take in these golden hours without needing to travel far or battle the busy crowds and is considered one of the best sunset spots in South Bay Scarborough.

Another lovely location close by is the South Cliff Gardens – Scarborough  . Beautifully restored and filled with mature trees, winding paths and quiet corners, the gardens offer an idyllic setting for an early evening stroll. As the sun lowers through the treetops and over the bay, you may find a tranquil spot to pause and absorb the colours dancing over the water. From the Italian Gardens in particular, the view is perfectly framed by elegant stone balustrades and planting that adds to the romantic atmosphere.

Many of our returning guests often remark on the sense of calm that comes with these moments. There’s something about being slightly removed from the bustle of the main town and harbour area that makes all the difference. Here in South Bay Scarborough, life moves at a gentler pace. The sound of gulls calling overhead, the rustling of leaves in the gardens, and the soft rhythm of the tide below create a perfect soundtrack to accompany nature’s nightly performance.

If you fancy a gentle wander, take the historic Cliff Lift down to the beach and walk along the sea wall beside the Scarborough Spa. There’s a peacefulness here in the evening, long after the day’s visitors have returned home. The beach becomes quieter, the light more golden, and the town behind you fades into a silhouette. It’s the kind of setting that invites quiet reflection or a heartfelt conversation as the sky deepens into dusk.

Further along, for those who enjoy a little more of a walk, the path toward Holbeck Gardens or along the Cleveland Way offers even more vantage points. You’ll pass through wildflowers, coastal grasses and dramatic viewpoints where the sea meets the sky in a truly magnificent display. These are the sorts of views that stay with you, long after the holiday is over.

There’s also something to be said for simply stepping outside The Cavendish and wandering to the end of our road. It’s a small thing, but we’ve often done it ourselves, just to catch the last light of day. You’ll find fellow sunset lovers quietly gathered, perhaps with a camera in hand or simply gazing out to sea. It’s communal in the quietest of ways, shared but not intrusive, as everyone enjoys the same peaceful spectacle.

Sunsets in Scarborough offer more than just a photo opportunity. They bring a chance to slow down, to appreciate the natural beauty of the coast, and to truly relax. Whether it’s a spontaneous stroll or a planned outing with your favourite spot in mind, we always encourage our guests to make time for the sunset. With each change of season, the sunsets bring a new palette. In the summer, you’ll find rich golds and hazy purples that stretch late into the evening. Come autumn, the skies turn deeper, with russet reds and burnt oranges. And in winter, although the days are shorter, the low light casts a glow that’s nothing short of magical.
